Why a proper valuation, not a shop estimate
A jeweller will happily tell you what your gold is worth. But a note from the shop down the road is not a valuation report, and it will not be accepted for a tax return or in court.
An approved valuer's report lists every item, states the weight and the purity, applies the rate for the relevant date, and is signed. That is a document you can rely on.
What we cover
- Gold ornaments and coins
- Silver items and utensils
- Studded jewellery, where stones are assessed separately from the metal
- Old family pieces, where craftsmanship may carry value beyond the metal
When people need it
- Schedule AL in the tax return. If your income crossed fifty lakh, jewellery has to be listed. See that page
- Family settlement. Dividing jewellery between children, which goes far better with a written list
- Court matters. Where the estate has to be valued
- Insurance. So a claim is not argued about afterwards
- Loans against gold. Where the lender wants an independent figure
How it is done
Each item is weighed, purity is assessed, and the piece is described and photographed. Where stones are set, the stone weight is deducted so you are not charged gold rates for a ruby.
The rate applied is the one for the date the valuation is made for, which is not always today. For an old estate matter, it may be a date years back.
Where it happens
Jewellery valuation is usually done at your home or bank locker, in front of you. Nothing leaves your possession. If the items are in a locker, arrange a time and we will meet you at the bank.
Questions people ask us
- Do I have to hand over the jewellery?
Never. It is examined in front of you, at your home or at your bank locker.
- How is purity checked without damaging the piece?
Purity is assessed by non damaging methods and from hallmarks where present. Nothing is cut or melted.
- Some pieces are very old with no bill.
Normal for family jewellery. Bills are not needed for the valuation. We assess what is in front of us.
- Can you value as on a past date?
Yes. We apply the gold rate for that date. This comes up regularly in estate and court matters.
